SHELBY COUNTY, TN -

(WMC-TV) - A Shelby County sheriff's deputy is dead after losing control of his vehicle and crashing on Highway 385 near Macon Road. Torrance Suggs, 39, was killed just after midnight.

According to SCSO, when Suggs did not show up to work, his commander called to check on him. Suggs' wife said he had left the house earlier.

When they checked the route Suggs normally took, deputies found his badly damaged vehicle. He had hit a large construction trailer on the darkened two-lane road.

The investigation into the crash is raising new questions now that it appears the road Suggs was driving on was closed.

A preliminary accident report states that Suggs drove from Highway 57 onto Highway 385 northbound, but that portion of the road is closed and it appears the crash scene is a few miles up the not-yet-open highway.

As the investigation continues, family, friends, and neighbors are reflecting on the type of person Suggs was.

"A part of me is missing just knowing that Torrance isn't here," said Paul Parker, who met Suggs when he first moved to the neighborhood more than 10 years ago.

Derrick Upshaw remembers Suggs cutting his grass for him after he had kidney surgery.

"We miss him over here because those are the kinds of people that if we could all choose our neighbors, we would choose someone like Torrance and his family," said Upshaw.

Suggs has been with the Shelby County Sheriff's Office since 2007. He leaves behind a wife and two children.

"Our prayers go out to all of his immediate family and of course, our Shelby County sheriff's family," said Chip Washington, SCSO. "We lost one of our own."

The crash is under investigation by Tennessee Highway Patrol.
