SOMERVILLE, TN -
(WMC-TV) - NTSB investigators plan to be at the medical helicopter crash site near Somerville all day Wednesday sifting through the wreckage.
Ralph Hicks, with NTSB, arrived at the site Tuesday, just hours after the chopper crashed, killing three people on board. He spent the afternoon doing a preliminary walk through of the area, making sure all of the helicopter's pieces are accounted for.
"What I see so far is about 90 percent of the helicopter is destroyed by impact forces and a post-crash fire," he said. "I don't see any missing parts. one of the things we look for is to make sure all the rotor blades are there, the tail rotor, the tail bloom, the cockpit, all those areas are within the area of the main wreckage and they appear to be at this point."
Hicks expects to spend the next two days documenting the evidence and taking photographs.
"What we'll do is take the wreckage piece-by-piece, go through every piece of it, look at it, examine it, try to rule things out. But we're very early for that. Anything that's provided by witnesses, we take the information down and we collect it all, put it together at the end and see what makes sense," he said.
NTSB will be on site for the next four or five days. Hicks says it is too soon to speculate what caused the tragic crash that killed Hospital Wing pilot Charles Smith, Pedi-Flite registered nurse Carrie Barlow, and Pedi-Flite respiratory therapist Denise Adams.
In addition to surveying the crash site, Hicks wants to talk with anyone who may have heard or scene the helicopter go down. If you have information that may be pertinent to the investigation, contact Ray Garcia with the Fayette County Sheriff's Office at (901) 826-9658.
NTSB is expected to hold a news conference Wednesday at 3 p.m. to provide an update on the investigation. Action News 5 plans to bring that news conference to you live on WMCTV.COM and our mobile apps.
