Murder suspect Michael Wright arrested in McComb

MCCOMB, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

Murder suspect Michael Wright was arrested this morning in McComb.   After being booked in at the Pike County jail, Wright was transferred into the custody of Hinds County deputies, and taken to Raymond.

Wright was staying at the St. Andrews mission. Mission nurse Joy Teruel recognized him from news reports and told the Sheriff's department he was there.

"It's a scary situation to think he was that close and to think there are other men sleeping over there," says Teruel.

Wright was arrested without incident around 10:30 Friday morning while he was on a work detail on the mission property.

McComb Interim Police Chief Scott McKenzie says, "When I say we surrounded the block we did just that, we surrounded the block. We expected him to run or do something out of the ordinary we were very surprised when he gave up peacefully."

Wright is accused of shooting and killing 55-year-old Jerry Brent, and is out on bond and awaiting trial on another murder charge.

Wright is charged with the December 2012 murder of Cere White Cannon. Cannon's body was found in Panola County on Christmas Eve.

Interim Chief McKenzie says Wright contacted mission officials Sunday, and was picked up from a truck stop in Brookhaven.

"This city is very lucky something else didn't happen but at the same time they need to understand that law enforcement is out there day and night," says McKenzie.
