Free flu shots offered around Shelby Co.

MEMPHIS, TN -

(WMC-TV) - Flu season is among us. And there is no reason that anyone should go unprotected.  The Mid-South medical community is working to make sure everyone who wants one can get a flu shot.

"You don't want to spread the flu around that's for sure," said Deborah Ovrall, R. N., The Shot Nurse.

The Shot Nurse partnered with Memphis Serves to give free shots to restaurant workers.

"Because they come in contact with thousands of people on a daily basis," said Ovrall.

Nurse Ovrall talked Action News 5's Anna Marie Hartman into getting a shot on the spot.

The quad vaccine, which battles four strains of the flu rather than the usual three, is new this year.

"I feel like this particular vaccination gives you even more opportunity to prevent yourself from getting the flu," said Dr. Joann Wood, Baptist Memorial Healthcare.

Free flu shot day at Baptist Memorial Hospital-DeSoto was held on Thursday. Another free flu shot day will be held November 2 at Baptist Memorial Hospital in Collierville, the Memphis Main Library on Poplar Avenue, and Baptist Minor Med in Olive Branch.

"Well, that's part of our mission to take care of our community so we take that very seriously," said Dr. Wood.

In the past, it was recommended that high risk groups get a second flu shot later in the season.

The new higher dose shot for people over 65 years old is showing good results and is available in Memphis, providing a one-stop shot.
