Citizens give back old & unwanted drugs

JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

Prescription drug abuse has become an epidemic across the nation.

Law enforcement agencies teamed up with the drug enforcement administration to take back old, used and unwanted drugs on Saturday.

The Rankin County Sheriff's Department participated in the "National Take Back Initiative."

The county's narcotics investigator collected dozens of drugs that have the potential to become addictive.

One resident we spoke to has been looking forward to this day for awhile.

"I had them all lined up. They were out of my medicine cabinet, but they were all on a shelf in the pantry. So I just brought them here today to get rid of them because otherwise, I would have to hang onto them for another six months," said local resident, Harlan Houghtvy.

Officials with the sheriff's department say you can drop off any old and unwanted medications any day of the week at the police station.
