Thousands take a step for breast cancer cure

JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

More than 5,000 Mississippians in their best shades of pink, whether it was tutu's, tights, or T-shirts, stood in front of the state capitol to celebrate their fight against breast cancer on Saturday.

"They say it takes a village to raise a child, it takes a community to help fight breast cancer because we're all affected," said Linda Allen Ley, Chairperson of Making Strides Against Breast Cancer.

The strength of pink and those who have beat breast cancer floated through the air.

There were teams of supporters with their own unique outfits or shoes. Each came out to honor someone who lost the battle or survived to pass along a message of prevention.

"Get your yearly check up, that's how mine was found. It was found very early and there is hope. For me, it hasn't been as bad as I thought it would be," said Liz Cain of Meridian.

Stephanie Ross, a Memphis breast cancer survivor said, " I was having some problems, you know a lot of aching and pain, and I was young. And know this shouldn't have been going on. And besides I'm a nurse, I know what my breasts should feel like. And after all the pain and everything that I went through, I went to the doctor. At first it was like, oh you just have fiber cystic breast disease".

Survivors signed the Wall of Hope and wore a princess crown.

Some of the women have been cancer free for a decade, others are just beginning their own journey.

"I was diagnosed last April and I will be finished actually this April with all of my treatment, and I'm in good shape," added Cain.

"It means everything, you know, because I made it. You know what I mean?," added Ross.

"A lot of people didn't make it, but I made it. You know, I have five children that I love to death and during the time that I first got sick my children took care of me. So, it means everything just to be here today. This is my first walk actually," Ross said.

"I'm just thankful to be here and I'm highly blessed and I'm a warrior," said survivor, Virgie Gibbs.

The American Cancer Society expected to raise more than $2,000 for research and support programs for cancer patients.

It's a good reason to dance.

For cancer survivors, every day is a celebration.

"My journey with cancer has been a blessing. I don't consider it as a curse. It brought me closer to my heavenly father," added Helen Williams, breast cancer survivor.
