Swaddling linked to hip problems

JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

Swaddling helps soothe a fussy baby but the technique has been linked to orthopedic problems later in life.

British researchers say swaddling forces a baby's hips to straighten and shift forward which can potentially cause them to misalign. These hip problems have been linked to an increased risk of osteoarthritis and hip replacement in middle age.

Experts say swaddling can be safe if the babies' legs are not tightly wrapped and pressed together and allows for plenty of hip movement.
