Third child injured in shooting released from hospital

JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

As Jackson police continue the investigation into the drive by shooting that injured several children, relatives said a third injured child was released from a Jackson hospital Monday night.

The three children were asleep inside a home on Camilla Drive on the night of October 29th when gunfire erupted from a passing vehicle. Two other injured children went home this weekend after bullets riddled the house.

Around 11:30 last Tuesday night a car drove by the house and sprayed it with bullets. Zakerianna Jefferson was one of three children hit when police say 18 rounds entered the house. The six year old was released from Blair E. Batson Children's Hospital this weekend. The bullet that struck her foot also hit her face.

"I had got shot at home on the couch in the living room," said Zakerianna Jefferson.

On that couch with her was her brother, five year old Corrion Igbadi. He was shot in the back upper left shoulder.

Her cousin, three year old Jalen Powell, was shot in the upper right thigh. He remained in the hospital 6 days.

Jalen's father, Jakavious Powell, said he was called around 11:45 that night and arrived at the scene to see all the children bleeding and running to him.

"Why my child had to be hit? He had to have three surgeries," said the 23 year old Powell.

Powell said he only heard what he was told by neighbors and doesn't know a motive for the shooting.

"It's a black Lincoln sedan four door, a female was driving and two guys did the shooting," added Powell.

Jackson Police say an assault rifle was used. ATF agents are assisting Capital City Police and were on the scene Wednesday gathering clues and interviewing witnesses.

The children's grandmother, Cametra Barber, is hoping for a quick arrest and asking for the public's help.

"If anybody out there got any information, these are innocent kids. They did not deserve this, could yall please tell somebody ok? How could you not have a heart and just shoot up someone's home like that," asked Barber.

JPD has released no motive, and no arrest has been made.
