Former fire chief convicted of gratification of lust

BRANDON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

The former fire chief of the Star Volunteer Fire Department will spend the next 15 years behind bars, with no chance of parole.

A Rankin County jury found 55-year-old Steven Lee Boggs guilty of gratification of lust. Three young girls testified during the trial that Boggs inappropriately touched them. However, Boggs was being tried for his actions against only one of those children.

Before Boggs' sentencing, several people, including his mother, pleaded with the judge, telling him Boggs is really a good man and should not receive the maximum sentence of 15 years. During that time, Boggs, who has shown very little emotion during the trial, began to cry.

"For as much as we fought for the last five years, this is the moment I've been waiting for," said Jennifer McCook, the victim's mother. "I mean this is just, I know for 15 years no one else's daughter will have to experience what my child started experiencing at the age of four."

Two of the young girls who testified in the case were related to Boggs.

After the trial concluded, Rankin County District Attorney Michael Guest said two additional children have come forward with claims that Steven Boggs sexually molested them.
