Multiple accidents on I-55 in Yazoo County snarl traffic

YAZOO COUNTY, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

The Mississippi Highway Patrol is trying to clear the scene of several accidents on Interstate 55 near Vaughan. One northbound lane of traffic is now open.

Skycopter 3 revealed images of a panel from a Penske rental truck inside an 18-wheeler.

The Mississippi Highway Patrol says a Transport of America 18-wheeler had a flat tire and was on the shoulder of the interstate, in the northbound lane, near mile marker 134.
For some unknown reason, the rental truck James Rhodes, 41, was driving left I-55 and hit the back of the 18-wheeler about 1:15 PM on Friday afternoon.

The Penske truck flipped down the interstate scattering convenience store items and other debris a quarter of a mile.

The 18-wheeler was carrying a non-hazardous material used in paint.

The driver of the 18-wheeler wasn't injured. Rhodes was taken to University Medical Center by Med Stat ambulance.

Meanwhile, as traffic slowed in the southbound lane, to presumably look at the crash, another accident occurred.

Emily Rosenbaum, 20, told troopers another car of her suddenly slowed. She over corrected and swerved to miss the vehicle. Rosenbaum's car landed upside down in a pasture. She suffered minor injuries.

Just south of those crashes, and about the same time, an 18 wheeler jackknifed. Yazoo County deputies say it was the only vehicle involved and there were no injuries.
