Red Kettle kickoff

JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

The Salvation Army's Red Kettle Campaign is officially underway. It is one of the first signs of the holiday season.

Red Kettles will be set up outside area businesses to collect donations. The money is used in the homeless shelter's New Start Program that helped 128 people in the last year.  Eighty-five-thousand people received food, clothing and emergency assistance. The red kettles help fund educational programs for youth, seniors and families.

"This money will be used through the entire year to help house people, shelter people, get people's lives back together, fix human crisis," said Captain Chapman.

"I've been on the board for over 20 years now and the most important thing around Christmas time is the red kettles," said Board Member Johnny Maloney. "When you see the people out there ringing the bell you need to come in, give an extra dollar, give some quarters, whatever you can give, because it just really helps a lot of people."

Tuesday The Salvation Army is asking 12-thousand people to donate 12-dollars to change 12 lives.  Captain Chapman says the money will help break the revolving cycle of poverty in 12 areas of need in Jackson.  Of course Tuesday is 11-12-13.
