HARVEST, AL (WAFF) -

A mobile home in Madison County caught fire Tuesday afternoon. Fire crews said an electrical problem caused the home on Old Railroad Bed Road to burn. Paramedics checked out the homeowner but did not take anyone to the hospital.

While this fire wasn't related to the sudden dip in temperatures, it does serve as a reminder about residential fires during the winter time. Harvest Assistant Fire Chief John Webster said calls do spike around this time of the year.

He said it's important to check all of your heating equipment and make sure its operating correctly. He also said keeping portable heaters at a distance is a must.

"What is too close? If I've got a portable heater, I don't want anything closer than three feet to the base of where it generates heat," said Webster.

Webster also advises not to put a heater against a wall with anything above it, because heat rises and doing so can be a major fire hazard.
