HUNTSVILLE, AL (WAFF) -

The Better Business Bureau is urging you to do your homework before donating to help the people in the Philippines.

Michele Mason with the BBB said scam artists are always lurking when there is a disaster. She said to take the time to check out organizations before you donate.

"We know people work hard for their money, but they want to support people who really have a need, like the people in the Philippines. So we ask people to please give, but give wisely," Mason said.

She said before you contribute; make sure you know the full name of the charity. Ask for something in writing, and check with the BBB to see if they have evaluated the organization.

If you suspect fraudulent activity associated with the relief effort, you can report your concerns to the National Center for Disaster Fraud hotline at 1-866-720-5721.
