JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

A long time Hinds County lawman was honored with the first Detective Eric Smith Award on Friday night. 

Sgt. Richard Brown was recognized for his efforts at a Victims of Violent Crime Recognition Summit. 

He was one of four law enforcement officers nominated for the distinction. 

Brown started working with Hinds County as a mechanic in 1984. He became a reserve deputy in 1992, then a full-time law enforcement officer in 1999. Brown is the sergeant over the investigations division at the Hinds County Sheriff's Department.

Brown considers himself a voice for victims who cannot speak. 

He says the Detective Eric Smith Award is one he'll cherish the rest of his life.

"Every time I look at it, you know, it's always going to remind me of Eric Smith and the job that he done. I mean he laid down a foundation, I'd say all investigators should try to do. And to me, I am proud to have it," said Brown. 

The Detective Eric Smith Award is given to a law enforcement officer in Hinds County for there outstanding work.

Smith was a Jackson police detective who was shot and killed inside JPD headquarters April 4, 2013 while interviewing a murder suspect.
