AU warns against counterfeit tickets for AU v. UGA football game

AUBURN, AL (WTVM) -

Thousands of football fans have made their way to the plains to see the Auburn Tigers take on the Georgia Bulldogs this weekend.

However, with over 87,000 people planning to pack Jordan-Hare Stadium, making sure that your tickets aren't fake is top priority.

"Usually for big games we urge people to be more cautious about counterfeit tickets," explains Cassie Abner, Assistant Athletic Director for Public Relations at AU.

Abner admits there have been problems in the past with fake football tickets making it past the gate, and more than one person showing up for the same seat.

This year, AU has instituted new scanning technology, so officials will be able to stop the problem at the gate instead of once people are in the stadium.

"The best place to buy your tickets is either through Auburn, Georgia or Stubhub, because those three we can track the transaction of the ticket and we can tell whether it's been transferred, voided or resold," says Abner.

"I would urge everybody to be very cautious about the tickets your buy or get from someone else," says Auburn Police Chief, Paul Register.

In the state of Alabama, it is legal to scalp tickets if you have a business license in the county you are trying to sell them in.

Register says they have not had many reports of counterfeit tickets this season, but with two of the biggest games left this year, he urges people to think twice before buying tickets of the street.

"Try to do everything you can to make sure the person is someone you can come back to if there is a problem with the ticket and the best way to do that is to deal with someone that is reputable," explains Register.

"If you're purchasing from someone you see on the street, have them walk you to the gate," says Abner, "Go ahead and see if that ticket is a good scan before you exchange money with that person."
