City of Oxford wants limits on adult entertainment

The Oxford Planning Commission wants the city to adopt an ordinance putting limits on adult entertainment and clubs.

The board of aldermen may look at a proposal in December or January.

City attorney Paul Watkins tells the Northeast Mississippi Daily Journal that Oxford had an adult business ordinance at one time.

Watkins says when the city reworked the land use code, it was left out.

Without mention of adult entertainment in the code, Watkins says adult clubs can go anywhere or go nowhere.

Watkins says courts have held that sexually oriented businesses can be regulated to protect public health and safety but that they cannot be banned outright.

Watkins says the city doesn't want an adult business to locate in an area where it shouldn't be.
