Twenty-seven Brazilian students were scooped up and flown to Savannah, Georgia, Saturday by the Brazilian Consulate in Atlanta. Sources tell us many students became concerned about their safety after an armed robbery in front of the dining hall November 9th.
JSU spokesman Eric Stringfellow calls it a was a random act likely committed by armed robbers from off campus.
"We want to close down some streets that make it into campus," said Stringfellow. "We think it's still too easy to get on and off campus; we want to address that."
Campus patrols have been beefed up and bike patrols have resumed.
Word of the incident has spread to other campuses. Millsaps College is home to 30 international students. Spokesman John Sewell talked with us about the incident.
"I certainly hope we can take this and learn from it," said Sewell. "But have those students come back and have others come here as well."
We were unable to reach to the Brazilian Consulate in Atlanta for comment on their concerns.
JSU said they wished the outcome had been different adding they had no records of any complaints about the international students safety.
"So far we have found no evidence any particular nationality or group has been targeted by anyone," said Stringfellow. "These all appear to be random acts."
The JSU campus Chief of Police refused to give us copies the students crime reports. I was told they are working on leads but do not have any suspects in the armed robbery.
