Pod C at Raymond jail almost move-in ready

HINDS COUNTY, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

The images from the inmate riot in Pod C the Raymond Detention Center in July 2012 led many to wonder whether the facility should be fixed, or bulldozed. It was built with many design flaws to start with. But the decision was made to forge ahead with repairs.

Today we learn the renovations to Pod C are almost complete.

"We're putting a fresh coat of paint," said Hinds County Sheriff's Department spokesman Othor Cain. "We expect full occupancy by mid-month next month. "Under that Grand Jury order, we were not to bring Pod C fully online until we were able to make renovations to the other pods as well because will have to rotate some of those inmates."

Cain says he can't show us the inside until the court-ordered deadline for repairs to be made passes, about five months from now. But for now, repairs continue.

$1M allocated Monday by the Board of Supervisors will help. But more money is needed to meet all court-ordered requirements, and no one knows where that cash will come from.

"And that will be a question for the board members just in terms of where they'll pool the money from," said Cain. "Of course you do know the board cut the Sheriff's budget by $1.4 million. For these new supervisors to come on board and talk about restoring, talk about allocating this money, they see the need, they see the importance."
