Albany area swimmers making waves in Peach State

ALBANY, GA (WALB) -

South Georgia has been known for producing football, basketball, and baseball talent.

It turns out the area is home some of the state's best young swimmers as well.

The Albany Area Y Rapids Quad A Swim Team are the three time defending state champions, and it's easy to see why: they are loaded with talent.

Nine of the team's swimmers are currently in the Top Ten of the newly unveiled Georgia Swimmers rankings.

Four of those have been ranked in the top ten before, but five others are making their first appearances.

With the state tournament not until February, head coach Jeff DeMott says earning a spot in the top ten helps keep the kids motivated.

"We'll see kids who kind of go from that top ten ranking to moving on up to score at state, moving on to the sectional level, to nationals and beyond," says DeMott.

"I'm excited about it," says 12 year old Reese Fye, who is ranked in the top ten. "I'm determined to go and get more and score for my team."

"It changes really often, so its not a permanent spot," says 15 year old Nicole Fye, also in the top ten. "It always motivates you to work to get to the higher spot."

DeMott says swimming may not be on the forefront of many south Georgians minds, but the talent in the area is here.

"Southwest Georgia in general and Albany in particular has seen some very top notch swimmers come out of it. The athletic talent down here is tremendous," says DeMott. "There's a tradition of that. It's not a huge sport, where we have hundreds and hundreds of kids, but its consistent and we have some really strong athletes. And we see that every year, some really good athletes come out of it."

Nicole Fye is headed to the national trials next month in Greenville.

The team is made up of swimmers from around south Georgia.
