JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

The Mississippi Department of Health says the city of Jackson's water is safe to drink. A precautionary boil water notice had been in effect for surface water users since Wednesday.

The boil water advisory was issued because of a loss in water pressure.

"The loss of pressure in the distribution system was a result of a pin breaking on the valve of a 48 inch water main line on Old Canton Road last night," according to Interim Public Works Director, Willie C. Bell, Jr. "An isolated event also occurred, where a driver hit a fire hydrant on Terry Road which caused the water pressure levels to drop as well."

This advisory did not mean that the water was unsafe, but it did mean that customers should take precautions and boil the water before use.
