BRANDON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

Rankin County School District is considering improvements at two high school campuses. The Mississippi High School Activities Association is mandating one change.

Brandon High School was informed by the activities association that Brandon's field design puts players and those on the sidelines at risk of injury.

The school board voted in October to make improvements to the Bulldog's football field and the Northwest Rankin High School track. Brandon's field width is 185 feet compared to the national standard of 190. The school wants a new field made of artificial turf.

"We have to do something to mitigate that concrete retainer wall in front of the bleachers that's a hazard for the players," said Rankin County School District Board President Cecil McCrory. "So it's got to be expanded out to the west."

Northwest Rankin wants an improved track to meet Class 6-A standards. Upgrades at both schools could cost the district $2.97 million dollars.

McCrory supports the recommended Brandon safety improvements but is not in favor of an artificial turf playing field.

"We've got roofs, we've got air conditioners 25 years old," said McCrory. "We've got a lot of needs that directly affect the education of our children that although this needs doing, I'm not saying it doesn't."

The board voted four to one and is in the process of taking bids for both projects. The Rankin County School Board will meet again on December 11th.
