Operation Shoestring gets JA donation

JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

The holiday spirit of giving was in high gear at Operation Shoestring on Bailey Avenue this afternoon. Jackson Academy students, from kindergarten through high school, hauled in bag after bag of groceries to donate to the inner-city Jackson community center.

It was a community service project the whole academy and parents took part in.

"It really means a lot, you know, it feels great to help somebody out, especially somebody that has less than you and it feels great to just help them out," said Catherine Buford, a Jackson Academy 9th grader.

"It being the holiday season, it's just time to give, said J. A.'s Dean of Students Bill Burch. "They're able to see what they have and be able to give some of that to others."

"That instills some value in them and those values will go a long way with those students and how they potentially as they grow into adults," added Operation Shoestring Community Outreach Coordinator Rolanda Alexander. "That will stay with them and they'll want to continue to give back as they get older and hopefully that'll be Operation Shoestring."

Organizers say parents and kids shopped together, searching for healthy as well as tasty foods for the holidays.
