JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

Jackson Police have launched Operation Safe Shop to help protect you during the busy shopping season.

You'll see lots of blue lights in our busy retail areas, like the Target shopping center in North Jackson, and Highland Village off I-55. They're reminding us to guard our purses, wallets and purchases.

Police say potential criminals are always looking for people who are overloaded with shopping bags, or who don't seem aware of their surroundings.

"We will be saturating, said Police Chief Lindsey Horton. "That word alone implies that we will be going above and beyond our usual number of officers. We will be there whether you see us or not."

Chief Horton surrounded himself with officers to announce the Operation Safe Shop launch Friday morning at the JPD Training Academy.
