PEARL, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

With one swipe of the card, customers are taking care of their holiday shopping at the Outlets of Mississippi in Pearl.

"I've been making lists and checking them twice. And if they're nice they're gonna get good things and if they're not, well I've got some switches at the house," said Colene McNair of Walnut Grove.

It seems more people are making the cut for shoppers. The Outlets of Mississippi says in just eight days more than 150,000 customers have helped most stores meet expectations.
However, Belhaven University Professor of Economics Dr. William Penn says nationally consumer confidence isn't as high.

"Up until the last month or so, I think, the consumer confidence was on an upswing," said Dr. Penn. "Now, of course, what's happened with the Affordable Care Act that and a number of other uncertainties about 2014 have, I think, (made) consumer confidence to level out."

Stores are offering early and large discounts, along with longer hours, and a better atmosphere. It's to make sure the consumer shops in the store and not on-line.

"(If) You can get the customer before he goes online, then your sales are gonna go up," says Penn.

Customers are planning and bargain hunting.

"It's bad but I'd rather go online. It's like less of a hassle and then you can already see what's on sale and what's advertised online," said Scheyna Williams. "So, it's a lot easier. But when it's a good coupon going on and it's a good sale you can't miss out."

"You should start preparing for Christmas shopping, actually during the summer," added Williams. "Like, you should just go ahead and map it out and see what like and see what they want."

Christmas shopping is the perfect time to overspend and run up debt.

"When you have an opportunity to over spend, and lets face it that's what Christmas is," said Penn.

He says it's best to always have a budget.

"Predetermine how much you want to spend on certain people," explained Penn. "The other way of course, is your partner. To get together and talk about this and then hold each other accountable."
Penn says pay in cash for all of your gifts. That will help you from busting your budget.
