JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

Two separate Jackson fires left a dozen people homeless Sunday.

J.F.D. Chief Arson Investigator Greg Travis said the first happened at the Autumn Place South Townhomes around 10:30 p.m. Saturday.

Two people were inside when the fire started in a common room area.

Travis said the cause was improper use of the fireplace.

The flames were put out, but rekindled later around 2:40 a.m. Sunday morning in the attic.

As a result the blaze damaged six apartments in the same building, leaving those residents without a place to live.

A separate fire left six people displaced after a kitchen fire at the Pebble Creek Apartments on Manhattan Road.

The fire started in a downstairs apartment in building W around 2:20 a.m. Sunday morning.

According to investigators, the fire was caused when food was left unattended on a stove.

That fire spread to other apartments in the unit.

Five people were able to escape and two were taken to the hospital.

Their injuries are not known at this time.
