Customers say they enjoy putting some of their hard-earned cash back into local economy.

"I think it's a lot more fun to shop downtown where it's not as crazy as it is at the mall," said Amy Aldridge. "I refuse to go to big retail stores. You know it's more fun to come out here and relax and shop and you know keep my money local and support local business."

Across the Mississippi River in Murphysboro, lots of people came out to do some Christmas shopping at the local shops downtown.

Several stores along Main Street rely heavily on local shoppers to keep their doors open.

The owner of Sis's Antiques says having a special day dedicated to them during the holiday shopping season helps keep business moving.

"Well I think it's fantastic that they've set aside a day for small businesses, since they are the backbone of the American economy, said Joe Green, owner."So many times small businesses are forgotten and it's great to have a day set aside for all of those small businesses."

The next big shopping day is Cyber Monday on December 2.
