Richmond police release more information on security guard beating

RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) -

The security guard who was viciously beaten while on the job is asking for help in finding his attacker and he's not the only one. Richmond police are also asking for the community's assistance.

66-year-old Jack Newsom's story touched many when NBC12 first spoke with him. Newsom was attacked two weeks ago while patrolling the old GRTC bus depot, the site of the Richmond Street Art Festival.

Now, investigators are sharing new leads in the case.

According to the lead detective, one person is responsible for Newsom's vicious attack. He also says, there is at least one witness.

Detective Joe Fultz says, Newsom was patrolling on Grayland Avenue when he was attacked by one suspect. The entire thing was caught on surveillance video camera.

The surveillance video also shows that a car drove by just as Newsom was attacked.

"We know for a fact that some people did ride by and may have gotten a glimpse at what happened," said Det. Fultz.

Fultz wants those people to call in.

As for Newsom, he says he's received an outpouring of support. Several funds online have been set up in his name and have raised more than $7,000.

Still, he's asking one more favor from any potential witnesses.

"If they saw anything just tell the police what they saw," said Newsom. "So it doesn't happen to nobody else."

Police tell NBC12 they are not ready to release the surveillance video.

According to Richmond police, there is a spike in robberies around this time of year and with the suspect who attacked Newsom on the run, officers are urging people to be extra cautious while out and about.
