Mississippi Voter ID starts in 2014

JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

Next year, everyone will be responsible for submitting some type of acceptable photo identification at the polls in order to cast a ballot.

Secretary of State Delbert Hosemann held a news conference Monday explaining how Mississippians can sign up prior to the June 3, 2014 elections. He called it a historical moment implementing the Voter ID law.

Any voter casting a ballot at the polls on June 3, or by absentee ballot in person at the Circuit Clerk's Office prior to the June 3 primary election, will have to show a photo ID.

If a voter does not have any documentation proving their identity, Circuit Clerks may verify their birth record FREE of charge.

If they need transportation to a Circuit Clerk's office, the Secretary of State's Office will arrange FREE rides.

Hosemann says no one will be discriminated against on any basis, and that this will close the chapter on Mississippi's voting past June 4th.

Research indicates that less than 2 percent of Mississippians do not have the appropriate form of photo identification. They will have to apply for a Voter ID in 2014.
