JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

The driver involved in a hit and run that led to the death of a 3-year-old has turned herself in to Philadelphia police.

The Conehatta girl who was a member of the Mississippi Band of Choctaw Indians died after being struck by an SUV in Philadelphia, Mississippi December 5.

The incident happened on the parking lot of GameStop. Kayzlen Thomas was airlifted to Batson Children's Hospital.

Three aunts, Tarina McMillan, Crystal Roach and Durnene Farmer, and grandmother Karen Thomas know this holiday season will be one of mourning for their family.

"They said it was a dark trailblazer, white female driving the vehicle," said great aunt, McMillan.

"Witnesses tried to stop the vehicle, stop the person, but they just split," said Kayzlen's aunt, Drunene Farmer.

Philadelphia Police Chief Detective Fredesv Moore says Kayzlen's mother, Skyler Lewis told investigators her daughter darted into traffic and was hit; an apparent accident that is now a crime.

Earlier the chief told the media they had identified a person of interest, but had not released her name.

Moore says initial charges against the suspect will be hit and run, and upgraded charges, if any, will be determined at a later time.

Kayzlen's parents have opted to donate their daughter's organs and tissues for transplant.
