Arrest pending in hit and run death of toddler

JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

What was likely an accident is now a crime, that could include manslaughter charges. But for now, a wanted suspect is facing hit and run charges.

A three year old Conehatta girl and member of the Mississippi Band of Choctaw Indians has died after being struck by an SUV in Philadelphia, Mississippi December 5. The incident happened on the parking lot of GameStop. Kayzlen Thomas was airlifted to Batson Children's Hospital.

Wednesday, December 11, Kayzlen was pronounced dead at UMMC at 9:48 AM. Three aunts, Tarina McMillan, Crystal Roach and Durnene Farmer, and grandmother Karen Thomas know this holiday season will be one of mourning for their family.

Amid prayers for miracles, 3 year old Kayzlen Thomas has died as a result of the hit and run. "They said it was a dark trailblazer, white female driving the vehicle," great aunt, McMillan said.

Kayzlen's aunt, Drunene Farmer said, "Witnesses tried to stop the vehicle, stop the person, but they just split."

Philadelphia Police, Chief Detective Fredesv Moore says Kayzlen's mother, Skyler Lewis told investigators her daughter darted into traffic and was apparent accident that is now a crime. He says police have identified a person of interest, whose name has not been released, but police are trying to find her to take her into custody.

Moore says initial charges against the suspect will be hit and run, and upgraded charges, if any, will be determined at a later time.  Meanwhile, the Thomas family is asking the suspect to turn herself in.

"She did not wait. She knows...she knows who she is," Crystal Roach said. "The majority of the injuries were to her head.  She had a laceration that was repaired when she got here, but she had fractures," added McMillan.

Grandmother Karen Thomas said, "I just wish whoever it is, just come forward."

Kayzlen is the daughter of Keantry Thomas and Skyler Lewis.  The have opted to donate their daughter's organs and tissues for transplant.
