HENRICO, VA (WWBT) -

Henrico fire officials confirm one man was killed in a house fire in the Sandston community Sunday evening. The structure was fully involved when crews arrived on scene in the 100 block of Old Memorial Drive. The fire was marked under control at 6:49 p.m..

Fire investigators scoured the home for clues, trying to figure out what caused it to ignite. Neighbors say they heard a series of loud explosions. They say the man who lived in the home had a wife and two children.

"The whole thing was engulfed in flames," said Amy Laws, who lives next door to the home.

Firefighters faced an entire house consumed by blazing fire. Officials say other family members were also on scene. However, no one else was found in the home.

Neighbors describe a series of explosions during the intense fire.

"I thought I heard gunshots...I thought it was thunder at first," continued Laws.

"It was loud like the house was crumbling down. It sounded like guns was going off in the house," added Edward Burnette, who also lives next door.

Fire officials say there was ammo inside the home, and the flames likely caused it to explode. Neighbors add the husband often shot guns for target practice in the back yard.

Henrico police officers and fire marshals are currently investigating.
