The Sandusky River in Tiffin crested Sunday night, then it crested again. On top of the double crest, ice is a major concern on flooded roads there.
Some business and residential basements have seen water with this flood, but no first or second floor damage has been reported. The high waters are due in large part to that double crest.
"Just coming at probably the worst time it possible can, right before Christmas," said Mayor Aaron Montz. "We were all caught by surprise and I think even the NWS (National Weather Service) was. They were not predicted a second crest."
Montz knows it could be worse for Tiffin, though. He says he is grateful to past administrations for building flood walls after the 1913 flood.
"We have those flood walls now. We can sustain up to a 17.5-18 foot crest before there is any chance of them coming up over the flood walls," he said. "We have yet to ever see a flood in the downtown since those were built in 1913, and it's been over 100 years now."
The concern for Tiffin now is the water on the roadways freezing.
"There is concern that the roads will be flooded and you never know," the mayor said. "I don't know how thick the ice will be over top, but ice can cause significant damage once it breaks up to the roads or to power poles or street poles – anything that are in the streets…So we're hoping, at least right now, that the ice doesn't form too thick and we're able to clear it out."
