Taking Back Our Neighborhoods- South Jackson roads

JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

It's not abandoned houses, but neglected roads that prompted a call for help from a south Jackson resident. We checked it out in this Taking Back Our Neighborhoods report.

It's not a pretty sight when you turn off of Hwy 18 onto Maddox Road...a bumpy ride thanks to some healthy sized potholes. It's the same Swiss cheese like scenario on Forest Hill Road.

Asked what kind of problems it caused for his vehicle, Austin Furlow said, "Well, you bust a tire, you bust a rim, you know, and it's bad on your shocks and everything else."

Furlow brought the problem to our attention after he called the city of Jackson.

Furlow said, "Yes sir, I called 960-1177 and told them about it and they said they'd check into it, but they hadn't done nothing about it yet that's why I called y'all, see what y'all could do."

Furlow says he's lived in south Jackson since 1986 and the city does fill in the potholes sometimes, but he says that's not enough.

He said, "Don't just throw the asphalt in there cuz when it rains or when they run over it, it's gone."

Furlow says he wants a more permanent fix of the road problems in his neighborhood.

He said, "We're paying taxes, high on gas, land taxes and house taxes and everything else."

Mayor Chokwe Lumumba has proposed a 1-percent sales tax to repair problems like those in Furlow's neighborhood. Voters will decide whether or not they want the increase on January 14th.

I called and emailed a city spokesman for response. So far, there has been no reply.
