BILOXI, MS (WLOX) -

The sounds of the holiday season have been replaced by the sounds of barbells, treadmills and cycles.

It's time to shape up. So how do you do it?

"I think people need to have a little bit more specific goals a lot of times. People have sort of a general vague idea that they want to lose weight. I recommend breaking it down into more specific measurable goals," said fitness trainer Andrew Zornes.

According to gym manager Kristye Morton, it all begins with a simple act.

"What they can do to succeed is to make a plan, and stick with it. The first thing is getting your foot in the door, get in the door and get joined up," Morton said.

Exercise can change your life. Just ask Diane Burton.

"Oh, definitely. My blood pressure went down, I lost weight, I have more energy. I just really enjoy it," said Burton.

John Sonnamaker has a different goal in 2014.

"My resolution is to continue doing what I have been, really just to maintain where I am. So I'm not trying to lose anything or gain anything, just continuing as is," said Sonnamaker.

While most of the fitness experts say there are many ways for you to achieve your health goals for the coming year, there's one tried and true method. Bring a friend.

That's the key for John Kirk, who hits the gym almost every morning.

"It's very important. It's tough getting up at 6 o'clock every morning and my buddy Jason, he keeps me accountable so I know if he's in the gym, I need to be here with him," Kirk said.

You're never too young to start, as father and son Charley and Corblin prove.

"Obesity is at an all time high," Charley said.

"Between the X-BOX and PS-4, that's all kids want to do now so it's important for me to teach my son to be healthy and active."

Making yourself and those around you healthier is the perfect choice for a new year's resolution.

For those of you who are really serious about leading a more healthy life, you might consider hiring a personal trainer to help you meet your goals.
