Bulger's Beat: Country dancers head to Music City

NASHVILLE, TN (WSMV) -

Nashville may be the home to country music, but country dance is at home in places all over the world. This weekend, the world championships of country dance are underway at the Opryland Hotel, with participants hailing from 22 countries.

What matters is what they can do on the "real stage." Out here, in the lights and adorned in sequins, the judges are watching their every move.

Tommy Lewis, of Boston, started dancing when he was 11 and has shown he has the guts to make it to these finals - both physical and mental toughness.

"I thought people will make fun of me, but I sort of opened up to telling people, and actually - not what you think - people were impressed that you'd do something so unique," Lewis said.

Line dancing, traditional country, even swing, cha cha and the waltz, are on display all day Saturday at the Opryland Hotel.

If you're more of a wallflower than a mover and shaker, you can go and just watch. Tickets are $10.
