Power outage knocks out heat to schools on coldest day of year

RAYMOND, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

Hundreds were left in the cold after a power outage Monday morning in Raymond.

It occurred as dangerous cold gripped the state.

For more than five hours parts of the City of Raymond were without electricity, meaning no heat for residents, businesses and schools in the middle of a hard freeze warning.

Students who returned from winter break weren't bundled up enough to combat the Arctic air outside and the cold temperatures inside Raymond Elementary and Carver Middle Schools.

Around 9:30 a.m. the buildings lost heat as a result of a power outage.

"I didn't have any power at my house, so I knew that the whole City of Raymond was out of power," said Raymond resident Bridget Oakes.

She found out after school that it was an uncomfortable start to the semester for her two sons.

"I didn't receive anything from the school system, but I knew that they would be safe if there's any problem that the school would contact me so I felt like they were ok," added Oakes.

Raymond Mayor Isla Tullos said the outage mainly affected the town square and the surrounding area.

Entergy spokesperson Mara Hartmann said high winds caused equipment to catch fire which resulted in other equipment failure at the Raymond substation.

This left about 450 customers without power.

Hinds County School District Community Relations Director John Neal said roughly 600 students at both schools had no heat.

The schools were dismissed shortly before classes ended for the day.

Lori Burns' son Gabriel is a seventh grader at Carver.

They live on the outskirts of Raymond, and she was unaware of the problem.

"He told me it was pretty cold. I just found out when I came to pick him up this evening that they had been without power today and then they said something about eating cold pizza and everything like that. So we asked him why didn't they give us a call, why didn't they let parents know," Burns asked.

As Entergy crews worked to make repairs temperatures remained below freezing and in the 20's throughout the day.

The restored power was a relief for parents and students who really didn't want a lesson in braving the cold on the first day of the new semester.

"It has been restored. We've been in the school. It's warm in the school now so hopefully we won't have this problem again," added Burns.

According to Entergy crews had completed repairs and restored power as of six p.m.
