Toddler safe after overnight standoff

PEARL, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

An overnight standoff in Pearl ended peacefully, and one man in custody. But police say a toddler was in the home during the tense situation.

It started around ten Monday night. Detective Jake Windham says Joseph Carter called 9-1-1 threatening to kill himself. When officers arrived at his home located in the 4200 block of Herrington Boulevard, they discovered Carter had barricaded himself inside.

"Once the door was breached, we could obviously see the suspect inside," said Detective Jack W indham of the Pearl Police Department. "Swat team made entry and was able to secure the subject safely. Also inside the residence was a 2 year old that was sound asleep in the bedroom."

The child was not hurt and is with other family members. Carter was taken by ambulance to a hospital for a mental evaluation.

He will face charges at a later date.
