What applies under 1% sales tax?

JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

Just days before the special election, Working Together Jackson held a "Get Out the Vote" training session at Voice of Calvary Ministries to encourage passage of the proposed sales tax.

If Jackson approves the infrastructure 1% sales tax, items like clothing and household furnishings will be included.

The added tax on tennis shoes which retail for about $50.00 will be 50 cents.

We contacted two Jackson car dealerships to see if the tax would apply and were told by both that they did not know.

We were referred by the city to 1percentmakessense.com web site which did not mention vehicles specifically.

If automobiles are included, the tax on a $29,900.00 sedan would be $299.00.

The Greater Jackson Chamber Partnership says the measure is supported by the business community which is concerned about the capital city's future.

"It's not good for Jackson if we leave the roads in the conditions that they're in which is not good, and if we don't do something about the quality of the water, as well as the boil water situations, the drainage issue all those are much more detrimental to us," said Greater Jackson Chamber Partnership President and CEO Duane O'Neill.

You won't have to worry about paying extra when you buy groceries or prescription drugs. Those items are exempt and won't be taxed.

Some have expressed concerns that any tax increase will discourage people from shopping in the city.

"We believe that the exemptions are a major part of this," add O'Neill. "This really takes the pressure off a lot of businesses that are out there. You've got to be able to get to these businesses in Jackson. When the roads are bad you've got to fix them."

If passed the $15 million dollars generated annually would only be used for infrastructure improvements and takes effect in March.
