Vet wins lawsuit against local authorities

JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

A veteran of the Mississippi Army National Guard Reserves wins his lawsuit involving local law enforcement. Ronnie Burton filed suit claiming officers with Jackson Police, the Hinds County Sheriff's Department, and Bureau of Narcotics shot him in the shoulder while serving a search warrant in Presidential Hills in 2008.

Burton was with friends and says he ran when he believed they were about to be victims of a drive by shooting.   The officers were in unmarked vehicles.   Burton was charged with 5 counts of assault on an officer.   All the charges were dropped. Burton admitted being armed but said he did not fire one shot at officers. Monday Burton was awarded $350,000 dollars. Judge Winston Kidd's order said those named in the suit showed reckless disregard for Burton's safety.
