ENKA, NC (FOX Carolina) -

A gas pipeline ruptured in Enka, NC, on Friday, causing a large explosion and fire.

PSNC Energy said they responded to the gas line fire on Sandhill Road, off of Smokey Park Highway, after a 12-inch pipeline was damaged on Friday afternoon.

According to fire officials, 50-foot flames were coming from the gas line.

Kelly Klope of the Asheville Fire Department said over 40 firefighters responded to the fire that was extinguished at 5:35 p.m.

Several vehicles were reported to be on fire near the scene, and two businesses and several homes suffered heat damage, according to Klope.

PSNC Energy said there are no reports of injuries and residential service has not been interrupted.

Klope said the rupture is under investigation and she did not know when the line will be restored or Sandhill Road will be reopened.

Brad Edwards of Buncombe County Emergency Management said local residents and businesses were evacuated and sent to Enka Baptist Church after the explosion.

PSNC Energy asked customers to conserve gas in western North Carolina on Friday night following the explosion.
