All thunderstorms had moved out of the area by 3:30 Saturday afternoon, but high water and flash flooding was still a problem in some areas.
The National Weather Service issued severe thunderstorm warnings and watches for several counties in Northeast Georgia, all Upstate South Carolina counties, and Polk and Transylvania Counties in Western North Carolina Saturday morning. Those warnings expired before noon Saturday.
The NWS expected the storms to bring wind gusts over 60 miles an hour.
"These winds may cause trees and power lines to fall," said Fox Carolina meteorologist Nicole Papay. "We're also expecting frequent lightning with these storms. So stay indoors and away from windows if you can, as these storms pass through."
The South Carolina Highway Patrol was reporting numerous instances of road flooding and trees down on roads across the area at 10:30 a.m. Visit the link to SCHP's real time traffic information board or www.foxcarolina.com/traffic for updates on road conditions near you.
Duke Energy was also reporting over 1,200 outages across Upstate counties as of 10:30 a.m. We've also provided a link to the list of current outage numbers. If your power goes out during a storm, Duke asks you to report the outage by calling 1-800-POWER-ON
The NWS also issued a flash flood warning for all Upstate counties until 3 p.m. Saturday.
Papay said the heavy downpours will could flood creeks and streams that are already at are near bank levels.
"These storms are the result of a strong cold front pushing through the area after warmer, wet air was pulled into the region yesterday," Papay said. "It's very similar to the conditions that create summer thunderstorms."
The NWS did issue a tornado warning for several Upstate counties Saturday morning, and then retracted the warning a short time later.
Papay said she expected the storms to move out of the region by late afternoon.
Sunday will see more in the way of sunshine and highs in the lower to mid-50s, so we will end the weekend off on a positive note, Papay said.
