ENKA, NC (FOX Carolina) -

Natural gas and water pipes have been repaired after an explosion and natural gas fire rocked the Enka community, but officials said they were still working to repair a massive crater the blast left behind on the road.

PSNC officials said early Saturday morning they completed repairs to the 12-inch pipeline that exploded and sent 50-foot flames towering into the air on Sand Hill Drive.

Officials said PSNC crews began going door-to-door at 7 a.m. Saturday to turn on meters and relight pilot lights for the 700 people who lost natural gas service due to the blast and the repairs.

Brian Postelle, spokesman for the Asheville City Manager's Office, said a 24-inch water pipe was also damaged in the blast. Postelle said Water Resources crews successfully replaced that section of line and tested to make sure the water flowing through it was within normal drinking water parameters.

Postelle said Public Works crews backfilled the hole left behind by the explosion and continued to clean debris from the site while the road remained closed to traffic.

Crews began repaving the road Sunday morning, and it reopened Sunday evening at about 7:30.

Neighbors continued cleanup after pieces of the road and other debris from the explosion landed in their yards.

Officials said they have not determined what caused the pipeline damage but will continue to investigate the incident.
