Man charged in brutal murder of Jackson woman

JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

Sixty-one year old Israel Hughs is behind bars charged with the murder of a Jackson woman. WLBT cameras were rolling when Jackson Police arrived on scene, on McClure Road in south Jackson, to find the victim's body.

Hughs was taken from the murder scene, arrested and charged with killing 53 year old Jennifer Coleman.

"Preliminary investigation reveals it was a verbal altercation that led to a physical altercation," said Jackson Police Officer Colendula Green.

The physical altercation turned into a brutal murder.

"The suspect allegedly struck the victim, Jennifer Coleman, with a blunt object to the head which was a result to the homicide," added Green.

Jackson Police are not saying what object was used in the murder, but they believe Hughs did beat Coleman to her death.

"He was taken into custody on the scene," said Green. "Once he was transported here to police headquarters he was interviewed by detectives and was arrested."

Coleman's family was at the scene. The victim's brother did not want to speak to us on camera, but did tell us Hughs lived across the street from Coleman and the two were friends.

"It's just very unfortunate the incident happened the way it did," said Green. "But, at the same time we were able to bring a suspect to justice to give closure to the family. So, we are still investigating it and our prayers go out to the family of this incident."
