Rankin County firefighters fought a house fire Friday afternoon, that spread to become a large brush fire. It started with a home at 741 Andrew Chapel Road.

Flames consumed half of the structure, but then the wind kicked that fire up, searing trees near the home and causing thick smoke to make it hard for even seasoned firefighters to breathe.

Then, a fireman's worst fear, flames that spread across the street to a grassy area. The wind also brought down a power line that authorities say sparked flames as well.

"The personnel we had on scene who were advancing the hose line now had to stop and prevent other structures from becoming fully involved," said Chris Walley with Rankin County Emergency Operations. Unfortunately, it was a fully-involved house fire and they lost everything, but we had to contain the other fire, hopefully not trying to get another structure involved."

Walley says the fire burned across at least 10 acres before they got it under control. Three volunteer fire departments fought the flames for at least five hours.

Investigators say the house fire started in the laundry room, where one of the residence's breaker boxes was located, but they're not ready to say it was electrical yet.
