Thalia Mara stage manager there when doors opened

JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

Thalia Mara Hall is undergoing renovations that began this week on the nearly 50 year old theater.

The $5 million in upgrades are a collaborative effort between the state, city of Jackson and Friends of Thalia Mara Hall.

It's the first major renovation since the facility opened in April of 1965.

Stage manager Jill Lucas was there.

She started her career in theater at what was the grand showcase of its time.

Her first job was in wardrobe.

Lucas said the improvements are long overdue for the concert hall which played host to Broadway shows, concerts, symphonies and more.

"It was a state of the art building. We had Ferrante and Teicher, the two dual pianists who were here, and when they got through with their concert they commented that it was the best acoustic house they had ever played in.So we're looking to get that back," said Lucas.

Renovations should be completed in mid May.
