Mississippi Valley State University announced Rick Comegy Tuesday during a press conference as the 16th head football coach in school history.

Comegy arrives at MVSU after an 8-year stint as head coach at SWAC counterpart Jackson State where he led the Tigers to the SWAC Championship game in 2013. At JSU, he amassed a 48-31 record and led JSU to a conference championship in 2007 in just his second year at the helm.

With more than 30 years of coaching experience, Comegy will bring both a winning tradition on the field and the classroom.

"It's not just about winning on the football field, but in the classroom," said Comegy. "I know a lot of people just say that but if you're not winning in the classroom then you're going to have a hard time on the field."

A total of 39 All-SWAC selections came under Comegy during his tenure at JSU, including the 2012 SWAC Offensive Player of the Year, HBCU Offensive and SWAC Player of the Year and SWAC Defensive Player of the Year.

Prior to JSU, Comegy compiled a 90-26 record at Tuskegee University from 1996-2006. He captured four Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference championship tiles (1998-2001, 2004) and three bowl game victories. In 2001, the Golden Tigers led the SIAC in both scoring offensively and defensively. In 2000, Tuskegee finished with a 12-0 record and went on to win the National Black College Football Championship.

Comegy takes over for a MVSU football program that finished 2-9 last season.

"I don't want to have a team that wins one year then goes away," said Comegy. "I want to build a program here where the team is consistently winning every year. And it takes a little while to build a program, but if we get some guys that are committed, a staff that is committed and I can tell that we have a city that's committed here…."
