Martinez man sentenced for trying to entice girls to have sex
AUGUSTA, GA (WFXG) -
A 47-year-old Martinez man was sentenced Tuesday to 24 years in prison for trying to entice young girls online to have sex and for destroying records during the investigation, according to the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Southern District of Georgia.
Fawad Shah Syed posed online as a man in his 20s named "Daniel" and talked to a person he believed to be a 14-year-old girl, according to evidence presented during the trial and sentencing hearing.
After four days of text messaging and several attempts to meet the girl, Syed showed up at what he believed to be the girl's residence with condoms and alcohol, according to the U.S. Attorney's Office. He was immediately arrested by law enforcement.
Syed contacted his wife from jail, and before telling her what charges he faced, instructed her to delete his e-mail account and remotely wipe his phone, according to the U.S. Attorney's Office. He also asked her to wipe his computer.
His wife cooperated with law enforcement by providing an investigator with Syed's computer and testifying at trial, according to the U.S. Attorney's Office. Syed's computer was searched, and revealed online texts that Syed had last summer with a 13-year-old girl in the Evans area.
Syed was convicted in September 2013 of attempted online enticement of a minor to engage in sexual activity, destruction of records in a federal investigation and attempted destruction of records in a federal investigation.
Syed's 24 years in prison will be followed by 10 years of supervised release. He was also ordered to pay a $6,000 fine and will be required to register as a sex offender.
