LA Tech baseball hits the diamond for the first time

RUSTON, LA (KSLA/Louisiana Tech Sports Information) -

With three weeks remaining until the 2014 baseball campaign gets underway, Louisiana Tech took to the diamond Friday for the first official practice of the season.

The Bulldogs began the day with infield and outfield work followed by a round of batting practice, but the team will continue practice and intrasquads throughout the weekend.

"It is the first day of practice and we have 22 newcomers on our roster right now," head coach Wade Simoneaux said. "It is a young group, an energetic group and a good locker room group so far. We are all anxious to get started at practice. We have 20 days to get ready for Feb. 14 and a good opponent in Southeastern Louisiana."

In addition to the 22 newcomers on the current roster, Louisiana Tech returns 15 letterwinners from a year ago, with four starting position players and one starting pitcher returning for the 'Dogs in 2014.

Simoneaux and Co. will play a total of 50 games this season, as 29 of those are scheduled to be played inside the confines of J.C. Love Field at Pat Patterson Park, now in its 44th year of service.

The Diamond 'Dogs will host eight home weekend series and five midweek contests over the course of the campaign, including a three-game set against Big Ten opponent Minnesota Feb. 28 - March 2.

The upcoming slate is highlighted by a 12-game home stand to open the 2014 season with in-state foe Southeastern Louisiana traveling to Ruston to open the season Feb. 14-16.

The Bulldogs will face off against a total of four teams that participated in postseason play in 2013, with Texas A&M, Florida Atlantic and UTSA making appearances in NCAA Regionals last season, while Rice advanced to the Super Regionals before falling to NC State on the road.

Numerous single game promotions and giveaways are scheduled for all 29 of the Bulldogs' home games this year and a full schedule can be found at LATechSports.com.
