LSUS sweeps Huston-Tillotson at the Dock

Posted: Updated:

The LSU Shreveport Pilots had five scorers net double figures with Will Nelson leading the way once again as the Pilots rolled to their ninth straight win 105-91 over the Huston-Tillotson Rams on Friday night at The Dock in Red River Athletic Conference play.

"I thought we played extremely well offensively. We were very efficient throughout the entire game, and we executed our plays at a very high level," said LSUS head Coach Kyle Blankenship.

One blunder the Pilots had was not being able to come away with stops defensively and Coach Blankenship pointed that out, "I was disappointed in our attention to detail defensively, but we will learn from that as we move forward."

For the third time this season Nelson eclipsed the 30 point plateau, tonight with 32 points as he collected his eighth double-double of the season pulling down 12 rebounds. He had several dunks tonight but a couple brought the crowd to their feet; the first was when Joseph James led him with a pass from the three-point line and then the other came toward the end of the game as it got the Pilots past the century mark as he slam-dunked the Brandon Davis pass that he used the backboard to feed it to Nelson.

Brandon Davis also had his share in the spot light as he tossed in the other Pilots' double-double with 19 points and 10 rebounds. Davis was second in the game with four assists but there was a few times where he took it to the bucket himself faking out the defense.

Joseph James was hot from downtown early in the contest making four of his six total three's as he finished with his season high of 22 points. He was six of nine from beyond the arc and a perfect four of four from the charity stripe. "JJ had a great night shooting the basketball. He really stretches the defense which opens everything up for the other guys," Coach Blankenship said.

Mark Politte helped out in a big way with 10 points and the game high of six assists while Dundrecous Nelson netted 14 points off the bench.

The Pilots stretched their lead to as much as 23 points with 3:45 to play in the game following the Davis-Nelson alley-oop. LSUS blazed the nets with 54-percent shooting while the visitors were not too far behind at 48-percent. The difference in the game was the Pilots ability to hit the long shot and at the free-throw line.

The next contest will be a tough one as the Pilots welcome the Our Lady of the Lake Saints who is known for their hard play and three-point shooting ability. The game tips at 7:30 p.m. at The Dock tomorrow night.

Women's game:

The LSU Shreveport Lady Pilots recorded a pair of double-doubles giving their head coach Ronnie Howell his 100th career victory at home and his 190th overall when they took down the visiting Huston-Tillotson Lady Rams 79-62 on Friday night at The Dock in Red River Athletic Conference play.

LSUS head coach Ronnie Howell was pleased with his squad's fast start, "We executed well early but we had a rough stretch with about 10 minutes to go but we closed it out well."

The Lady Pilots had eclipsed a 10-point lead just five minutes into the contest but that lead evaporated down to single digits with four minutes to go in the game and then LSUS quickly pulled back to a double-digit lead.

Jenna Diakos finished the game high of 25 points, 17 of which came in the first half of play. Diakos pulled down 10 rebounds while Byroneshia Santiago's 12 points and as many rebounds accounted for the other double-double for the Lady Pilots.

Two other starters for the Lady Pilots recorded double digit points as Shanovia Gamblin and Kiara Taylor each tossed in 13 points Gamblin had the game high of nine assists.

The Lady Pilots blazed the nets with 55-percent shooting and thankfully so because they turned over the ball a season high 27 times. Luckily the Lady Rams only cashed the miscues in for just 13 points. Diakos and Santiago helped the Lady Pilots dominate the paint where they collected 56 of their points.

The LSUS defense was just as tough on the HT offense, forcing 19 turnovers and holding them to 31-percent shooting. The game could have been a little more exciting if the Lady Rams could have found their stroke from beyond the arc, they were just two of 21.

The Lady Pilots' lead made it to double figures just before the half where they led by a dozen, 36-24. Their lead grew to as much as 19 with one minute to play in the game.

The next contest will be tomorrow night at The Dock at 5:30 p.m. as they take on the high-powered offense of Our Lady of the Lake University.
