JULIA'S FORECAST: Another blast of arctic cold in store

JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

It's a transitional day as we change over from the warm weekend weather to the frigid chill we're diving into on Tuesday. Brisk northerly winds carry in cooler air today, causing temperatures to hold steady or even fall through the afternoon. Expect to spend much of the day near the 40 degree mark! Otherwise, a generally dry day is in store despite the few showers some folks in south central Mississippi woke up to.

The changes really take hold tonight as temps pitfall into the 20s. Much of central Mississippi is under a Hard Freeze warning during the overnight, so be sure to protect the plants and bring the pets indoors. On top of that, the breeze will still be rather strong, so wind chills will make it feel like teens and even single digits up in the Delta.

Come Tuesday, we'll be watching the potential for winter weather for a few folks. Most have nothing to fret about but a Winter Storm Watch is in effect for south central Mississippi, including Brookhaven, McComb and Hattiesburg. We're expecting sleet and freezing rain during the day, with a change over to some snow showers during the late afternoon and evening. Up to 2" of accumulation is possible for these areas.

We're monitoring the situation very closely, so be sure to check back for updates!
